Archivist Browser Extension Privacy Policy

Last Updated: August 19, 2026 | Version: 1.1.0

Summary

The Archivist Browser Extension collects your AI conversation data only when you explicitly click to archive a conversation. The extension transmits that capture only to a server on your local machine (localhost). The extension itself does not call Archivist-operated cloud APIs. Optional cloud adapters in the desktop app are listed on the local-first exception list and stay default-off.

Data Collection

What We Collect

When you click "Archive Conversation" in the extension popup:

  • The conversation title
  • All messages in the current conversation (your inputs and AI responses)
  • Message timestamps
  • Conversation metadata (model used, if available)

What We Do NOT Collect

  • Browser history
  • Cookies or session tokens
  • Personal information
  • Data from any other websites
  • Any data without explicit user action

Data Transmission

All extension-collected data is sent exclusively to http://127.0.0.1:7742 (your local machine). The extension does not include a cloud capture endpoint.

Data Storage

Data is stored on your local machine in your Archivist vault directory. Archivist does not operate a remote vault. Website hosting and optional default-off cloud adapters are named on the exception list; they are not the extension capture path.

How Data Is Used

Extension-captured conversation data is used only to archive conversations into your local Archivist vault and power local search/retrieval features in the Archivist app. It is not used for advertising, profiling, or model training by Archivist.

Permissions Explained

  • activeTab: Read conversation content from the current tab only
  • Host permission (claude.ai, chatgpt.com): Required to extract conversations from supported AI platforms

Third Parties

The extension does not share, sell, or transmit captured conversations to third parties. The desktop app's optional cloud adapters require a separate exact-model confirmation and are not part of this extension.

Data Retention

Archivist extension data is retained only on your local device for as long as your local Archivist vault exists. No extension data is stored on Archivist-operated servers. Uninstalling the extension stops future collection but does not automatically delete your local vault data.

Data Deletion

You can delete extension-collected data at any time by removing archived conversations from your local Archivist vault and clearing related browser extension storage. Uninstalling the extension also stops collection. If you need help with deletion workflows, contact support@archivist.tools (published address; delivery is not independently verified).

Changes to This Policy

We will post any changes to this page. Material changes will be highlighted in the extension update notes.
